EmiratesOverview Of The United Arab EmiratesLocated along the south eastern tip of the Arabian Peninsula lies the United Arab Emirates, a constitutional federation of seven emirates; Dubai, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Sharjah and Fujairah. Founded on the 2nd December 1971, the United Arab Emirates is today one of the worlds most developed, and fastest growing economies, with a GDP which grew by an unrivalled 35% beetween 2005 and 2006. Based on a federal system, each of the emirates within the UAE is managed by its own ruler, under the the provisions of the constitution of 1971. Within each emirate, the ruler holds considerable power, controlling revenues from natural resources in the region as well as local government legislation. The Supreme Council consists of the individual rulers of the seven emirates within the UAE, and is responsible for the election of the Council of Ministers. The ruler of Abu Dhabi is also the President of the UAE, the Head of State, and the ruler of Dubai is the Prime Minister of the UAE and the Head of Government.The official religion of the United Arab Emirates is Islam. Recent years have seen huge changes within the United Arab Emirates, and today the emirates are amongst the most forward thinking and innovative economies in the world. Boosted by revenues from natural resources, considerable emphasis has been placed in recent years on the development of the UAE as a tourist destination. This process of diversification on GDP has been highly successful, to the degree that the UAE is now considered to be one of the worlds most popular tourist destinations. |
